Weekly Writing Challenge: Dialogue

“Street Boy, you’ve been out too long…” the lyrics to the song had barely registered in my mind when she threw up her hands and exclaimed “Wow, isn’t that just incredible!”.

We were both lounging on the couch in front of the television. I sat there with a small grin on my face brought about by her enthusiasm and a heavy heart, filled by thoughts of the film we had just watched together.

“The guy lost 30 years of his life, what do you think he felt?” I asked her.

She replied, “Yeah, well better late than never.”

One can’t argue with that, I thought. Still something about that movie, bothered me. It made me sad to think that there could be so many brilliant, talented people out there that despite putting in the effort, never receive the recognition due to them.

I said to her in almost a whisper, “How often have you heard the words – put in the effort, get going and do something, work hard and you will get rewarded for it. Fortune favours the brave and all..”

“Well here is a guy, who put in the effort, took that risk and put out not one but two amazing records. Everyone involved appreciated his music. Everyone thought he would be a huge success but then, nothing!”

“It makes me wonder, can success be so dependent on luck?” I asked with an almost naïve desperation, wanting so bad for it not to be true.

“I get what you’re saying, but he found success in the end, didn’t he?” she replied, as the next track began playing and we could hear the soulful streams of Sugar Man play in the background.

“Sugar man, won’t you  hurry, cause I’m tired of these scenes. For a blue coin won’t you bring back all those colours to my dreams….” Rodriguez crooned in the background with such a unique sound that it made you feel his pain.

If you haven’t watched the movie “Searching for Sugar Man” I highly recommend you go watch it, not just for the story it covers and the questions it has raised in my mind, but also for the excellent music.

Finding Purpose.

What is it like to be driven? To be so focused on a goal that you see nothing else. I sometimes envy those that have found their purpose, the thing that makes them get up and go, day after day. The energy that comes with having found one’s life goal is to my mind – magical. It fills the individual with a sense of direction and to us wanderers, seekers, it fills us with awe for the human being that is driven by a clear sense of purpose.

We can sense the difference in an individual brought about by having a goal that excites, energises and guides. Their passion is almost palpable.

So, how does one go about finding one’s purpose?

How do I make sense of this restlessness inside me that has me looking in every direction? Seeking to find that something  that will help me reach fulfillment. That will bring peace and tranquility to my soul.

Is there even such a thing?

I don’t have the answers. I am but seeking myself, hoping to understand who I am and what life means to me.

I have no path to follow but my own. But I hope I find guides along the way who have found their own path. And share experiences with fellow seekers.
